Hydraulic Cylinder Design Software Free Download: How to Create and Test Custom Manifolds with i-Des

While there is a wide selection of standard hydraulic cylinders, many projects require a special approach. Customised cylinders may be an excellent way out, reducing wear and tear while extending the lifespan of the system.

For my work I use AutoCAD LT or ePlan Fluid to draw hydraulic, pneumatic, lube and P&ID schematics. Companies where I worked and where I have the work now, provide this software because the price of them is unbelievably high for the regular individual.

Most companies use 2D CAD software for their mechanical design and combine regular drawings design with the schematic design. For that, fluid power designers create own symbols libraries or use free and ready to use libraries from different suppliers, for example: (as an symbol library from EATON or symbol library from SUN Hydraulics).

The Scheme Editor software is available to you free of charge and allows you to intuitively create pneumatic circuit diagrams. This software helps you create standardized pneumatic circuit diagrams, from simple designs to complex projects. CAD skills are not required.

Theoretically, using this software you can try to design a generic schematic because some generic symbols like cylinders, pumps, motors, pressure gauges, and others also present in the library. But to make the design easily you have to use HydraForce hydraulic components mostly.

I have already wrote the article about this online application. SUN created really nice online application. Very intuitive and comfortable work, minimum buttons, no any complicated menus. But again, you can try to design generic schematic because some generic symbols like cylinders, pumps, motors, pressure gauges and others also present in the library. But first of all this application developed for SUN Hydraulic components using only.

Thank you very much for this post.I tried the free fluid software, I searched also for a couple other programms and regarding free and a user friendly interface draw.io is very good. The hydraulic elements which can be found on the lower left more shapes => Fluid Power and Proc Eng. are limited. But symbols and images can be added, there is a scratchpad and the workflow is very intuitive. I think it is worth mentioning.

FluidPower.Pro is a free resource where any Fluid Power specialists can share their knowledge, interesting info about new products or just make a discussion on any topics related to the hydraulic or pneumatic.

In a previous post, I described the danger associated with the intensification of pressure in a double-acting hydraulic cylinder. In this post, I will explain how to use the intensification effect to test the integrity of the piston seal in a double-acting hydraulic cylinder. But before attempting this test procedure, it is absolutely essential that the danger associated with pressure intensification in a hydraulic cylinder is fully understood. Therefore, read this article FIRST!The conventional way of testing the integrity of the piston seal in a double-acting cylinder is to pressurize the cylinder at the end of stroke and measure any leakage past the seal. This is commonly referred to as the "end-of-stroke bypass test".The major limitation of the end-of-stroke bypass test, is that it generally doesn't reveal ballooning of the cylinder tube caused by hoop stress. The ideal way to test for ballooning of the cylinder tube is to conduct a piston-seal bypass test, mid-stroke. The major difficulty with doing this is that the force developed by the cylinder has to be mechanically resisted, which in the case of large diameter, high-pressure cylinders is impractical. However a mid-stroke bypass test can be conducted hydrostatically using the intensification effect. The necessary circuit is shown in Figure 1 below. Figure 1. Hydraulic cylinder test circuit.Test procedureThe procedure for conducting the test is as follows:

If the ratio of effective area between the piston and rod side of the cylinder is 2:1, then if the rod side of the cylinder has been pressurized to 3,000 PSI, gauge (2) on the piston side should read 1,500 PSI. If the differential pressure across the piston is not maintained, this indicates a problem with the piston seal or tube.Under no circumstances should flow be directed to the piston side of the cylinder with ball valve (1) closed. Failure of the cylinder and/or personal injury could result. When conducting this or any other hydrostatic (pressure) test, always wear appropriate personal-protection equipment.REMEMBER: pressure intensification in a double-acting hydraulic cylinder is a potentially dangerous phenomenon. And failing to consider its implications can be a costly mistake. That's really interesting that one in four hydraulic cylinders could have problems. I'll apply your tips to look for signs like bent rods that indicate a problem. I don't have much experience with hydraulics, but have always been fascinated by them. My uncle uses them a lot in his job and was showing me how they work the other day.

Now that you know the minimum size of the hydraulic cylinder bore, you must now choose the ideal rod size. Most HPS cylinders come with several rod options. The correct rod is chosen based on the necessary stroke length, which has an effect on the buckling resistance of the rod. When selecting the rods, the smallest rod in the bore should only be used for reduced stroke thrust loads or in reduced pressure applications. The largest rod should be used in cases that depend on its reliability and maximum strength.

If the desired rod diameter is greater than the largest diameter in the bore size of the selected cylinder, it is time to re-examine the cylinder design parameters. It is usually in these situations that the application requires a custom hydraulic cylinder.

The hydraulic cylinders are divided into two types, depending on their mounting style, either a pivot mounting or a straight line mounting. Pivot mounted cylinders are used when a load is to be moved in an arc and includes supports such as a clevis and a trunnion.Cylinders mounted in a straight line are used when the load is to be moved in a linear direction. It includes a flange support and a back or front foot.

A hydraulic cylinder must have the right seals, as they play a vital role in preventing any oil leaks. This, in turn, guarantees a continuous and flawless use of the cylinder. The seal should be selected based on the cylinder's applications, operating environment and the maximum operating pressure it can withstand.HPS International offers 4 types of seals :

Long cylinder strokes can add another layer of design consideration to any project, but with the right tools and understanding these potential problems can be easily mitigated and a good solid design can easily be obtained. 2ff7e9595c
